The Centre for Business Development works with employers to find business solutions and staff development opportunities throughout the United Kingdom at a time and place to suit your needs.

The major strength of the Unit is in the team of industry specialists who work with organisations to identify the most appropriate learning route for employees and offer a full range of interventions from short courses to certificated work based learning.

Workforce Development

We focus on assisting organisations to maximise their business potential through the development of their workforce. Through the delivery of Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) and certificated short course qualifications we work with staff to develop their skills, increase their performance and ultimately improve job satisfaction. We deliver our training to a wide range of organisations and have developed a broad portfolio to support employees wishing to improve their skills with courses at all levels to ensure we are a one stop shop for our customers.

National Training Programmes

Borders College contracts annually with Skills Development Scotland (SDS) to assist in meeting Scottish Government targets for employability. Our current contracts include the Employability Fund, Modern Apprenticeships programmes and Foundation Apprenticeships.

The Employability Fund assists unemployed individuals by providing flexible training programmes and work experience that responds to the needs of employers and the local labour market. The courses currently offered Certificate of Work Readiness and Work Experience Programmes.

Modern Apprenticeships involve training programmes for those in employment and cover a wide range of qualifications and industry sectors. The opportunities are very varied and flexible. We currently have a contract for Modern Apprenticeships in Business and Administration, Game-keeping, Horticulture, Agriculture, Mixed Farming, Management, Customer Service, Social Service: Children and Young People and Healthcare – levels and ages vary.

Foundation Apprenticeships, for S5 pupils, are based on existing industry recognised qualifications. Over a 2 year programme candidates also have the opportunity to put their learning into practice in the workplace. We currently have a contract for Business Skills, Social Services: Healthcare and Social Services: Children and Young People.

Community and Open Learning

The Business Unit also delivers community provision across the Scottish Borders and has developed a diverse range of leisure classes and certificated qualifications to those wishing to up-skill, change jobs or enter further or higher education.

An Employee Benefits Package has also been developed to offer employers the opportunity to pay for community classes for their staff to enable them to attend Borders College in the evening to develop new skills which will assist them in their developing roles within the workplace.
