Department Overview

Supported Programmes are located at the Scottish Borders Campus in Galashiels.  Classes are held throughout the campus and in addition there is a suite of easily accessible, dedicated rooms which form a department base.  Students working on their catering skills benefit from the excellent facilities in the new catering suite and restaurant complex.   Classrooms are well-equipped with modern IT facilities to support learning and teaching, including assistive technology.

Full-time Supported Programmes are designed to increase learners’ independence and/or to prepare them for further training or employment.  Part-time programmes develop skills for leisure or provide more specialist training relating to particular areas of learning difficulty.

The Lifeskills programme and the preparatory Lifelink programme are designed for young learners with high support needs.  Classes cover a range of practical skills, confidence building activities and essential skills such as communication and money handling.

Workwise helps to prepare school-leavers, who have had some additional support in school, for the world of work.  Through a weekly programme of work experience and work based activities learners develop the skills and attitudes which increase their employability and help them to make informed choices about their futures.

The Workwise Preparation is a full-time 1 year programme which introduces learners to the Workwise programme and provides a more gradual introduction to work.

Workwise Link involves attendance at college one day a week during the final year of school.  This provides a preparation for college life and ensures a smooth transition from school to college.  There is also the opportunity to join the Schools Link  taster programme over a two-week period during May.

The part-time Heads You Win programme is for adults who have suffered a brain injury and Computing for the Visually Impaired gives training in the use of specialist assistive software.  In addition there are part-time classes in cooking, music, drama and a range of leisure activities.
