At Scottish Borders Campus
Full-time 36 week course
3 days per week in College

Entry Requirements:

Candidates for the NC should have a minimum of grade C passes in mathematics at Intermediate 2/National 5 level as well as qualifications in technology or physics based subjects. Alternatively, candidates may have passed an NC Engineering qualification at level 5 or have relevant industrial experience. Mature applicants are also invited to apply without the necessary minimum requirements

Course Content:

The NC in Mechanical Engineering provides learners with an excellent foundation in the basic principles of Mechanical Engineering.

Subjects studied include: dynamics, statics, thermofluids and material science.

Mathematics, IT and communications are also covered to give a well-balanced course that will provide students with the necessary knowledge and understanding needed to undertake further study at HNC, HND and degree level.

Progression Opportunities:

The NC qualification equips learners with a major requirement of the Modern Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering. The NC is in effect, a third of what is needed to complete the MA thereby giving those who complete the programme successfully an advantage in securing an apprenticeship and then full-time employment. The NC will provide the opportunity to study Mechanical Engineering at higher education level where you could achieve either an HNC or HND in Mechanical Engineering, or else a Bachelor of Engineering degree.
