Borders College

Community learning has never been so varied

Attending college is not all about full time education, as many Borderers are already aware. Many courses are offered on a day and evening basis, with some courses running through the day and some as traditional evening classes. With over eighty classes on offer, starting in August and September, Borders College has just published its latest wide ranging offering of classes.

Covering a range of subject areas, from Highers to family classes, there is sure to be a course for everyone, be it leisure or a certificate class.

Community learning

Very often students want to study a certificate course to enable them to get a qualification for that all-important job promotion or attain the entry criteria for college or university. Our certificate classes range from British Sign Language to National 5 in Maths.

Computers and the digital age are the norm these days but not everyone is an expert. Our courses can get the absolute beginner, as well as the more knowledgeable, to the next stage of understanding in a number of non-certificate computing areas. So if you are starting out, our ‘Computing for the Terrified’ course might be just the helping hand you need. For those looking to develop their social media skills we have classes introducing you to Facebook, or even selling through social media.

Ever popular at Borders College is the range of language courses that students regularly sign up for. This year sees the return of some of your favourites, from Chinese, French, German, Spanish and, once again, our introduction to British Sign Language – ideal for beginners.

Celebrity TV chefs have done much for the uptake in many of us taking to the kitchen for our leisure. So if you enjoy Mexican or Indian cooking, or perhaps baking and cake decorating, one of our ‘In the Kitchen’ courses is sure to please your palate.

For those with a creative or practical nature, perhaps Bee Keeping, Dog Grooming, Life Drawing or even learning to play the Ukulele might take your fancy. We have a superb range of classes to choose from in our Arts and Crafts section.

With our busy lifestyles and greater understanding of our own well being, we continue to offer a number of classes, from Body Massage to Mind and Body Workout and Yoga. Come along and find the inner you.

If you like to get your hands ‘on the tools’ then our ‘In the Workshop’ provision might just suit you. Would you like to get the basics of plumbing and electrics, or perhaps try your hand at furniture making? We are sure to have a programme to get your DIY juices flowing.

New for this year is our ‘Family Provision’. We all value the time we have with our kids, so this range of ‘and kids’ classes will give you the ideal opportunity to spend quality time with your children – be it cupcake making and decorating or massage through story telling, you are sure to have a great experience as a family.

Our classes are offered throughout the Scottish Borders, at a number of venues, based on demand. We are always looking for new ideas, venues and staff to teach our classes – so please get in touch with our friendly community classes team for a chat.
