Peebles make-up artist holds bridal master class
Borders College welcomed former student Danni Burnside (from Peebles) into the Salon for a special bridal make-up master class, delivered to Level 2 Beauty Therapy students in the training salon at Galashiels.
Danni gained her Level 3 NVQ in Beauty Therapy from Borders College in 2006. She went on to further her career at Stobo Castle before leaving to start a family, after which time she set about renewing her skills by completing intensive make-up courses, including one with MAC Cosmetics.
Sharing her expertise with the class, Danni carried out a full demonstration of a beautiful look that any bride would be pleased with, which the students then recreated on each other. This gave them the chance to view techniques and products used to create a classic bridal look, as well as pick up skills that will be very useful when they begin to seek employment in the industry.
Lecturer Liesa Hamilton, who organised the event, said:
“It was a very worthwhile session, the students picked up so many tips and then had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with help from Danni. The students gained so much from the workshop – they all did a great job and it really gave them so much more confidence with their skills.”
Student Amber Blair added: “It was a fun experience and I learned a lot, in particular what colours work well with different skin tones. I feel a lot more confident in make-up now.”
Danni herself commented: “I was really surprised at the amount of girls who showed real interest in this side of beauty therapy. It was an area that we touched basics with when I was in college back in 2004 and I really wish we could have had a make-up artist come and show us more.”
Talking to the group about running her own successful business, Danni explained:
“I built a studio in my garden which I can do my make-up trials and other treatments from. Since doing this my business has gone from strength to strength. I feel that working alongside other local businesses in the same industry has helped – we all root for one another and help each other where needed.”
After seeing real potential in the class, Danni has said that she would not hesitate to allow a couple of the girls to shadow her for the day at a wedding. This fantastic opportunity to gain experience in the specialist area of bridal make-up has already been taken up, with student Emma Needham (from Selkirk) having already begun training with Danni.
