Cash machine card skimming device found at Scottish Borders Campus

Cash Machine

Students at Scottish Borders take time to listen to PC John Lennon regarding Cash Machine skimming.

Students and staff at the Scottish Borders Campus are less likely to be the victim of cash machine crime thanks to a visit from PC John Lennon from Lothian and Borders Police who did, in fact, have a card skimming device for demonstration purposes on Campus!

PC Lennon was there to demonstrate the lengths that criminals will go to in order to get your details as you take money out from cash machines. During the visit PC Lennon was able to demonstrate how the criminals fix false readers and cameras to the machines as well as giving out valuable advice to over 120 interested staff and students from both Borders College and Heriot-Watt University.

Key points to observe when using a cash machine are:

  • Check the ATM card slot carefully before inserting your card
  • Check for additions to the ATM that are not usual
  • Do not use the ATM if you suspect it has been tampered with
  • Cover your hand as you enter your PIN
  • Be aware of anyone standing close behind you and looking over your shoulder when entering your PIN
  • Check your account balance regularly
  • Inform your bank immediately if your account shows any transactions you did not make
