College bags award in honour of Year of Young People
Borders College has been awarded a ‘Young People’ award in honour of its successful engagement with Scottish Food & Drink Fortnight 2018 through the Local Food on Local Plates series of events held in September.
The award, bestowed by Scotland Food & Drink, is in recognition of the Year of Young People (YOYP), which Borders College has actively supported through various events this year. The Local Food on Local Plates events saw a well-attended food fayre, professional chef demonstrations and a charity dinner take place across two days, bringing people together to celebrate local food as well as the future generation of industry professionals – the students themselves.
Fiona Richmond, Head of Regional Food for Scotland Food & Drink, described Local Food on Local Plates as “outstanding”, adding how much the support and enthusiasm Borders College showed for the campaign was appreciated. Fiona commented:
"We are thrilled to present Borders College with this award for their contribution to a very successful Scottish Food & Drink Fortnight 2018. The Local Food on Local Plates events really captured everything we were trying to do with this year's #ScotFoodGoals campaign, helping raise the profile of the food and drink and hospitality industry to a younger generation, as well as showcasing quality produce from across the region. Congratulations to staff and students for doing such a fantastic job!"
Joanne George, Curriculum & Learning Manager for Business and Heritage Tourism, added:
“The success of this event was down to the hard work and dedication of our students and staff, and they should be very proud of themselves. We were delighted to win this award, as it recognises just how fantastic our young people are and the commitment they have to their chosen profession.”
The students also received recognition in the form of a hamper of Scottish produce from Cranachan and Crowdie for use in their cookery classes, including Skye Sea Salt and Mara Seaweed.
