Downhill student set to compete in World Cup
One delighted Borders College Downhill student has been selected to represent the junior British National Team in two separate rounds of the 2018 Downhill (DHI) Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) World Cup, taking him a step closer to his ambition of reaching elite level in competitive Downhill racing.

17 year old Jake Ebdon, originally from Yorkshire but more recently living in Banchory, relocated to Galashiels last year to enrol on the College’s Mountain Biking programme. He is set to compete in round 2 at Fort William on 2 and 3 June 2018 before travelling to Leogang, Austria, for round 3 the following weekend. The 2018 DHI UCI World Cup features 9 events, taking place in Europe and North America between April and September.
Jake, who is eligible to enter the World Cup as he competes in the British Series, says that he can’t wait for the experience and is “absolutely buzzed” to have been selected to represent the British team. As the dates coincide with the College term, Jake has received support from the College to complete his course ahead of schedule, thereby allowing him to take up this fantastic opportunity which could really help to propel his professional career.
The Mountain Biking course has helped Jake to push through to junior level. He explains:
“It’s a higher level of riding, the highest I have ever been a part of. I competed at youth level last year, so this is my first opportunity to ride in the junior category.
“Qualifying comes first and the top 20 get through. I’m not putting pressure on myself for this first event, I feel good about it and I’m happy to have this experience.”
His parents have supported him throughout, despite moving home a number of times and currently living in Abu Dhabi.
After the summer break, Jake intends to return to College for the first year of HND Coaching and Developing Sport, whilst continuing to race competitively with the goal of reaching the elite (18+) level.
