Employability success for Peebles Modern Apprentice
A young Peebles woman, Carson Veitch, has demonstrated the potential rewards to be gained from a work placement opportunity, by successfully progressing from the Employability Fund programme to a Modern Apprenticeship, supported by Borders College.
Having initially been referred to the Employability Fund (EF) Stage 3 programme by her Skills Development Scotland Work Coach, Carson approached The Retreat Beauty Salon in Peebles for work experience due to having a keen interest in hairdressing and beauty therapy.
Carson’s placement allowed her to gain skills that were invaluable in helping to grow her confidence, simultaneously providing her with an excellent opportunity to experience working in a professional salon environment. Claire Gibson, Salon Manager at The Retreat, supported Carson through her placement, describing her as: “an asset to the team, booking appointments, dealing with telephone and face-to-face enquiries, welcoming clients and advising on products available.”
“I decided to choose this route as when I was informed about it, it sounded like it would allow me to gain the confidence needed before I went to college to pursue a career in beauty, which I really feel passionate about. I have enjoyed partaking in the courses as I feel I have learned a lot about myself and what I am capable of.”
Upon successful completion of the EF programme, Carson secured employment at The Retreat, making her eligible to apply for a Modern Apprenticeship in Business and Administration. Now enrolled on the MA programme, she is busy collating evidence for her portfolio whilst undertaking relevant units such as Provide a Reception Service, Using the Telephone and Store and Retrieve Information.

Borders College and its Business Development Unit rely on the support of local businesses to provide work experience opportunities across various sectors including administration, care, catering, construction, engineering, leisure, retail, textiles, warehouse and many more. Candidates eligible for the EF Stage 3 programme can work a minimum of 100 hours and a maximum of 240 hours. The Business Development team can work flexibly with employers to ensure the hours suit both employer and candidate.
