Fiona McAllan presented with British Empire Medal
The Lord-Lieutenant for Berwickshire, Jeanna Swan has presented the British Empire Medal (BEM) to Fiona McAllan of Duns for her outstanding service to Education in her role as Admissions Officer at Borders College.
Mrs McAllan first came to the College as a mature student in 1991 and was awarded the Office Administration Student of the Year in 1992 which led to her being recommended for a full-time post.
As Admissions Officer based in the Student Advice Centre, she provides a huge range of personal support and advice to students, dealing directly with around 2,000 on an annual basis. To date has been responsible for the recruitment, advice and guidance of over 38,000 students.
She also attends numerous parents’ evening, career events and shows to provide advice and is the main point of contact for guidance teachers in the nine Borders secondary schools. Her relationship with these staff and those from Skills Development Scotland helps make the transition for students as seamless as possible and has a positive impact on student retention.
The Lord Lieutenant said: “It was my absolute pleasure to present Mrs McAllan with her well-deserved British Empire Medal. Her commitment, dedication and hard work has been of immeasurable support to students and colleagues alike over the years, with curriculum staff known to rely heavily on her organisational skills and in-depth knowledge of the college programmes. She has also been proactive in ensuring a culture of respect within the college which continues to be of tremendous benefit to all who attend.
“It has been said that when Mrs McAllan retires she will have to be replaced by more than one person, due to the number of invaluable roles she fills, and I have no doubt that this will be the case. In the meantime, she is to be congratulated on her considerable achievement to date and I wish her well as she continues to be a source of support and inspiration to all who come into contact with her.”
Mrs McAllan was presented with the British Empire Medal at a ceremony at Scottish Borders Council Headquarters on Wednesday 22 March.
