‘Girls Night In’ beauty fundraising event a great success

Beauty students

Borders College Beauty Therapy students on the NVQ level 3 programme recently held a promotional event, organised annually as part of their ‘Promotional Activities’ unit. The theme for this year was “Girls Night In”.

The ticketed event offered customers a back, neck and shoulder massage, or a file and Polish, a glass of Prosecco and a light buffet as part of the cost of entry. The students also hosted 10 minute demonstrations on ‘5 steps to Flawless Skin’, and Indian Head Massage which is part of the Beauty Therapy course’s recent focus on massage.

Various stalls were on hand, allowing customers to purchase items including customisable gifts (from Printed Polly), candles (from Imperial Candles, Coldstream) and handmade cards (also from Coldstream). A pick and mix sweet stall was run by local company Annie’s Sweets, as well as a cake and candy stall which the students all contributed to, as well as receiving a donation of tablet to sell from Tasty Tablet in Jedburgh.

Student Rhonda Robertson said: “Everyone enjoyed the event and the raffle went down extremely well.” Amongst the fantastic prizes were the top prize of a ‘Lazy Spa Day for 2’ at Peebles Hydro Health and Beauty Spa, a special beauty hamper, handmade soaps, bags and gloves, and wine and chocolates.

Beauty Therapy Lecturer, Sally Elder, who helped the students to organise and host their fundraising event said: “Thank you to all who supported the NVQ Level 3 Beauty Therapists on their Promotional Event on Wednesday evening, it was a great success, they have managed to raise over £550.00.”

Student Kirsty Munro added: “The event exceeded our expectations, there were more visitors than we expected and we almost doubled our fundraising target.”

The money raised will be shared equally between the Borders General Hospital Special Care Baby Unit and the Student Development Fund, which helps the students to fund additional training opportunities made available to them throughout their course.
