Hospitality scholarship awarded to ambitious student

Angus Levell, a level 2 Catering and Hospitality student at Borders College, has been successful in securing a hospitality scholarship through the Hospitality Industry Trust (HIT) Scotland.

18 year old Angus, from Hawick, applied for the scholarship in September last year after being encouraged by lecturer Robbie Bunton (pictured with Angus below), and was selected from over 1,000 applicants to be interviewed in January, at The Place Hotel in Edinburgh.  Having completed a specialist craft scholarship himself last year in Michelin-star Andrew Fairlie kitchen at Gleneagles Hotel, Robbie has first-hand experience of how much the experience can boost confidence, update skills and open up doors.

Robbie consider Angus to be a deserving recipient of the scholarship, saying:

"He's a very ambitious student with a lot of knowledge and he's done really well in his course.  As somebody who already works in the industry, this scholarship will allow him to take his skills to the next level."

Angus Levell and Lecturer Robbie BuntonAngus will complete his scholarship at Kilmarnock’s ‘The Cook School Scotland’ with award winning pastry chef Helen Vass (winner of the BBC’s ‘Bake Off Crème de la Crème’ show in 2016) for two days during the April holiday, when he hopes to develop his skills in sugarcraft.  Angus says:

“I like the adrenaline I get from being in the kitchen, it’s a great place to be.  I’m interested in sugarcraft and want to learn about the different methods and how they affect the end result.”
