Modern Apprentices take on Masterchef challenge

A group of Modern Apprentice students (MAs), employed by Scottish Borders Council, recently took part in a Masterchef challenge at the Borders College restaurant. This was part of their induction to the Social Services Children and Young People Award SCQF 7, which will be delivered by the Borders College Business Development Unit (BDU).

The event, sponsored by Tesco, involved 23 students split into several groups, preparing a two-course (one savoury and one sweet) lunch for a mock group of six pre-school children. Using the College kitchen, a mixture of themed dishes were prepared, before being served in the restaurant.

Each of the groups were judged on their dishes, and Borders College Principal Angela Cox, along with Director of Business Development Deirdre McKendry, were invited along to decide and announce the overall winners.

The event was part of a two-week induction programme, aimed at providing underpinning knowledge and skills to the students before they start their studies and begin their placements at various nurseries across the region with Scottish Borders Council.

The induction process also saw the students studying on various other short courses, such as Paediatric First Aid, Elementary Food Hygiene, Infection Control, and Introduction to Child Development and Play. Team building, Harvard Referencing, Reflective Writing, Healthy Eating and Continuous Professional Development were also covered.

After the fun and informative session, the winners of the Masterchef challenge were announced as Alison Jack, Kate Allen, Aimee Watson and Rebecca Newell, with their nature-themed dish reflecting the rurality of the Borders area, and highlighting the importance of nature and the outdoors when educating children.

Katharine Mathison, Vocational Manager for the BDU, commented:

“The Business Development Unit at Borders College has been working with SBC on this project and we are delighted with the input from the students. It is an exciting and innovative programme and we hope to develop this with some of our other partners in future.”
