Modern Apprenticeship kick starts Receptionist’s career

Kerryn Law, a member of staff at the Borders College Centre for Business Development in Hawick, has reason to celebrate after successfully completing her Modern Apprenticeship in Business and Administration.

Eager for an opportunity to secure employment, Kerryn applied for the SCQF Level 5 MA in 2016 after completing her sixth year at Jedburgh Grammar School, finding the idea of working in a large organisation whilst gaining a recognised qualification at the same time very appealing.

Kerryn worked hard to successfully complete the qualification in under a year – no mean feat when also working full time as a Receptionist – selecting units that fitted in well with her role on Reception (which include providing reception services, producing documents and handling telephone calls).

Jill Lawrie, Training Consultant for the Business Development Unit, said:

“Kerryn worked holistically on the 8 units that make up the award and also successfully completed the required core skills as well as the World Host course as the MA enhancement.  She consistently produced a high standard of evidence and embraced the challenge with determination and enthusiasm.”

Mentor Lynn Crosbie, who supported Kerryn on a day to day basis, provided witness testimonies which only served to enhance the evidence already submitted by Kerryn herself.

Speaking of how this opportunity has helped with her development and progression, Kerryn says she finds it very rewarding to be treated as a valued member of staff in the workplace and work with supportive colleagues, adding:

“I now have the knowledge of what it is like to have the responsibility of working in a busy office environment. I have gained vital working skills and a recognised qualification which I could potentially progress from.  This experience has undoubtedly been a great way to start my working life.”

Kerryn will continue in her role on Reception until August next year, after which she hopes there may be a position available to allow her to continue the skills she has gained throughout her MA.
