Nursery employee balances education with family life

Edinburgh Nursery & Preschool employee, Samantha Steedman, is proof that it is possible to successfully balance an education with work and family life.

Samantha SteedmanSamantha (pictured), who works part-time at St Margaret’s Nursery & Preschool, completed her Modern Apprenticeship in Social Services Children and Young People at SCQF level 7 through Borders College last year.  As a mum to 3 girls, achieving this qualification alongside work and family required considerable commitment, which Childcare Tutor/Assessor Nicola Aitken has praised her for:

“Samantha was a hard worker who was determined to carry out her MA in a timely manner from the moment she started. It wasn’t always easy for her to find time for study due to family and work commitments, however, Samantha persevered and regularly made sure she found a way get college work done.

It was a pleasure to support Samantha through her qualification and to see her enjoy learning and being able to relate what she was learning into her work practice.”

Attending a weekly tutorial where she received one-to-one support from Nicola, Samantha was able to submit her written work and assignments electronically providing her with the flexibility she needed to achieve.  Samantha herself adds:

“My tutor was very helpful, guided me in all the right directions and spoke me through all my work.  Studying for my MA was manageable; I particularly enjoyed child protection, children's well-being and resilience and theories.  I also found reading my text book which I was giving at the start of the course very interesting and found myself reading this quite a lot.  Overall I found my MA interesting and enjoyed gaining more knowledge.”

Samantha’s success goes some way towards demonstrating that it is possible, with the right guidance and support, to continue to progress your education and career whilst working and raising a family.
