Professional standard changes mean electricians have to be updated

18th Edition Wiring Regulations

The clock is counting down for the introduction of new professional standards, which affect all electricians in the UK. Known as the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, any electrician who completes and signs off electrical installation work must have completed the update by the time it comes into force in January 2019 and be competent to the new standards, which have had a six-month grace period which started in July this year.

Any candidate for the course is expected to meet the minimum requirements and already be qualified to SVQ Level 3 in electrical installation or equivalent.

However, the opportunity to get updated is not as difficult as you might imagine, as Jimmy Louth, Curriculum Learning Manager at Borders College, says:

“We will be offering the new qualification with a variety of learning methods, starting with a three-hour evening class session and then self-directed study, followed by the compulsory exam.”

The course, which is being offered in Galashiels, can also be offered at any location throughout Scotland, subject to demand.

Mr Louth went on to say, “We have kept the price as low as possible, at £240.00, because we are aware of the financial implications this additional professional update will have on businesses.”
