Richard qualifies to lead his Emtelle team
Borders College and Emtelle UK Ltd have recently supported Richard Cook (from Hawick) through his level 2 Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) in Team Leading.
Prior to becoming a Shift Supervisor at Emtelle, Richard was an Apprentice Mechanical Engineer and had subsequently undertaken a number of SVQs over the years. He agreed with Emtelle’s senior management that the Team Leading SVQ would be beneficial to him as part of his ongoing development.
Richard utilised the skills he gained on the course by applying them in the workplace and found building his portfolio useful as it encouraged him to find out more about Emtelle, as well as look more closely at their existing procedures and systems with a view to implementing efficient changes: “It provided me with increased reassurance and confidence to manage my team, implementing new techniques developed through the initial training sessions and implementing company procedures.”
Both Emtelle and Borders College provided Richard with the support necessary to complete his qualification at the same time as working full-time – his employer provided him with the time and resources required, with colleagues assisting with witness testimonies and references, whilst his Tutor Assessor from the College provided training, information and assistance, responding to any concerns he may have had during the course.
Richard admits that in the early stages he approached his course with a reserved enthusiasm, but as he delved deeper into his training he began to get more drawn in saying, “It became my personal goal to complete the course – I was amazed at how much I actually completed.”
In the future Richard hopes to progress within Emtelle with a view to advancing his skills and knowledge, perhaps by undertaking a further SVQ in Management.
