Catering and Hospitality students at Borders College have successfully showcased their culinary and front of house skills at the prestigious Doddie Weir Charity Dinner and Auction last night.

The evening began when guests were greeted by Doddie Weir, who was awarded the Borders College Honorary Fellowship in September 2018.

Front of house students served canapés, prepared in the kitchen by the catering team, before guests were invited to take their seats in the College Restaurant by master of ceremonies for the evening, Hawick High School depute headteacher and rugby aficionado, Bruce Aitchison. Doddie Weir then welcomed guests to the College and spoke about the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation in his usual upbeat and inspiring way.

Catering Lecturer Robbie Bunton commented:

“The students coped really well under the pressure of such an important event and were able to showcase the very real and practical learning that they receive here at Borders College.”

Supporting the front of house waiters and waitresses were lecturers Fiona Nichol and Elaine Henderson.

Fiona Nichol said:

“Our students were delighted when they found out that we would be hosting the dinner for Doddie’s charity.”

Elaine Henderson commented:

“Doddie is such a people person and it was great to see him spending so much time with the students and saying how grateful he was for all their efforts.”

The eight course menu, which read like something from a Michelin star restaurant, was received with absolute delight from the diners, who had paid £50.00 per ticket to attend.

Doddie spent time with the students in the kitchen before the evening got underway, with many taking the opportunity to be photographed with him.

The event was catered for by level 1, 2 and 3 Catering & Hospitality students at Scottish Borders Campus. If you feel inspired to start your career in Hospitality and catering you can apply online now. Click this link.
