Finding Somewhere to Live

Borders College doesn’t provide its own student accommodation, but don’t worry – Galashiels and the surrounding area have plenty of options for students looking to rent privately.

You’ll be responsible for arranging your own accommodation, but our Student Services team is here if you’d like advice or guidance along the way.

The College does not endorse or verify any external accommodation providers or listings. Take time to carry out your own checks so you are able to make informed decision before entering into any rental agreement.

Top Tips for Renting

Finding the right place can take a few weeks, so start early and don’t rush your decision.

  • Take your time – don’t feel pressured to go for the first place you see
  • Always view a property in person, and try to go with someone else
  • Check what furniture and appliances are included
  • Make sure any promised repairs or changes are confirmed in writing
  • Only sign a lease if you fully understand and are happy with it – it’s legally binding
  • Letting agents can’t charge you just to view a property or set up a lease
  • Check the landlord is registered and the property has the right licences (e.g. HMO licence if sharing)
  • Never send money before viewing a property in person
