Terms and Conditions

Please see the below information outlining Borders College course terms and conditions.

The description of the College's courses in its prospectus and on its website represents the College's aspirations as to what will be delivered.  However, for various reasons, the courses actually delivered may be different.  For example:

  • funding for a course (whether from the Government or from the College's charitable donations or other sources of income) may be reduced or withdrawn;
  • there may be insufficient interest in a course which means that it is uneconomic or unviable to deliver;
  • there may be a change to the College's other resources, such as staff or accommodation, which affect the delivery of a course.

A change could involve the replacement of a course with a new course, variations to course content or structure, the merger of courses, or the withdrawal of a course.

The College may make a change to a course for the reasons set out above, or for other reasons where it is reasonable for the College to do so.

If there is a change to a course about which you have expressed an interest, the College will let you know as soon as possible.

By expressing an interest about a course to the College, you agree to these rules about changes to courses.

If you accept the offer in relation to the Course, you agree that there might be circumstances which mean that the Course has to be changed. For example:

  • funding for the Course (whether from the Government or from the College's charitable donations or other sources of income) may be reduced or withdrawn;
  • there may be insufficient interest in a Course which means that it is uneconomic or unviable to deliver;
  • there may be a change to the College's other resources, such as staff or accommodation, which affect the delivery of a Course.

A change could involve the replacement of the Course with a new course, variations to the content or structure of the Course, the merger of the Course with another course, or the withdrawal of the Course.
The College may make a change to the Course for the reasons set out above, or for other reasons where it is reasonable for the College to do so.

If there is a change to the Course, the College will let you know as soon as possible and will take reasonable steps to minimise any disruption which you might face as a result of the change.
Changes to the Course which are not material will not otherwise affect the contract between you and the College in relation to the Course.
If the Course is withdrawn (or the Course is materially changed and you do not want to proceed with it):

  • the College will use reasonable endeavours to provide access to any suitable alternative course at the College; and
  • the College may refund to you any tuition fees which you have paid to the College in relation to the Course, unless these are to be applied to any suitable alternative course.

The College will not be liable to you in any way if the College is unable to deliver the Course in accordance with the description of it in the Prospectus due to reasons beyond the reasonable control of the College such as industrial action, extreme weather or natural disaster. These are examples only.

  • If this happens the College will let you know as soon as possible, and will take reasonable steps to minimise any disruption which you might face as a result.

Student Internet Access
This information sets out guidelines for the acceptable use of the Internet by students.

Borders College offers all students access to the Internet through the computer rooms and learning resource areas as an educational and research resource. Students may also request an individual e-mail account and, with the approval of a lecturer, may create a personal Web page providing that all material placed on Web pages is appropriate.

Students are expected to use the College systems with courtesy and responsibility, showing respect for other Internet users. The College reserves the right to monitor and place restrictions on the material accessed or posted through the system. Any behaviour by students which negatively impacts on the use of the Internet by others, the College equipment, its network, or which damages the College‘s standing in the community will not be tolerated. It is the individual‘s responsibility to ensure that passwords and logins are kept confidential, as they will be liable for any infringement of the College systems.

Students suspected of having violated this Policy will be provided with a written notice of the alleged violation and an opportunity to present an explanation. After investigation the College may enforce appropriate disciplinary procedures that could result in withdrawal of Internet access, formal warning, suspension or expulsion of students who breach this Policy.

The College will co-operate fully with any external investigation related to any illegal activities conducted through the College Internet system. To ensure that all students are aware of the Internet Access policy, please read the following rules and sign the attached form to confirm that you have read and understood the rules for using the Internet at Borders College.

System Security and Safety
Students are responsible for their own individual account and should take precautions to prevent others from being able to use their account – they should not provide their password to another person. Personal contact information about other people (e.g. address, telephone, work address) should not be posted. Students should promptly disclose any message received that is inappropriate or makes them feel uncomfortable. A lecturer or the system administrator should be informed if a possible security problem is identified.

Illegal Activities
Students should not attempt to gain unauthorized access to any other computer system. This includes attempting to log in and access another student‘s files. No deliberate attempts to disrupt the computer system or destroy data by spreading computer viruses or by any other means should be made and students should acknowledge that these actions are illegal. The Internet should not be used to engage in any illegal act, such as arranging for a drug sale or the purchase of alcohol, engaging in criminal gang activity, threatening the safety of person, etc.

Inappropriate Language
Students should not use obscene, profane, lewd, vulgar, rude, inflammatory, threatening, or disrespectful language when posting public or private messages and in material posted on Web pages. Students should not engage in personal attacks, including prejudicial or discriminatory attacks. Students should not harass another person by persistently acting in a manner that distresses or annoys another person. If asked by a person to stop sending them messages, the student must stop.
Students must not knowingly or recklessly post false or defamatory information about a person or organization.

Plagiarism and Copyright Infringement
Students must not plagiarise works found on the Internet.

  • Plagiarism is taking the ideas or writings of others and presenting them as if they were yours. Rights of copyright owners should be respected. Copyright infringement occurs when work that is protected by a copyright is inappropriately reproduced.

Inappropriate Access to Material
Students will not use the Internet to access material that is profane or obscene (pornography), that advocates illegal acts, or that advocates violence or discrimination towards other people (hate literature). If students mistakenly access inappropriate information, they should immediately tell a lecturer or system administrator. This will protect against a claim that they have intentionally violated this Policy.

  • If you try to access a website with forbidden content the following message will be displayed in the web browser and information pertaining to your attempt will be logged by the MIS department.
