Data Driven Innovation – Let Data Drive You

Let data drive you towards a new goal by equipping you with future-proof data science skills. Scottish Borders, Edinburgh, West Lothian and the Fife regions are looking to help equip the population with data science skills.

This is to ensure that while ‘big data’ plays a bigger part in our society we have a workforce who have the knowledge and ability to utilise this effectively.

The four regions who are looking to implement this have come together to form the Edinburgh and South East City Deal that runs the Digital Driven Innovation (DDI) Gateway - helping to promote the free online data skills courses.

Borders College, along with partner colleges, will create opportunities to seize the data economy for disadvantaged communities across the City Region and address gender inequality in the tech sector. With the goal of transforming the region into a digital powerhouse the Deal aims to make Edinburgh and South East Scotland the data capital of Europe.

Digital skills can help your business thrive. But accessing the training you need to get started can be costly. That’s why the ‘Growing Your Business Online’ programme has been created, to help you enhance and gain new digital skills, to boost your business’ performance and processes.

You will learn:

► how to use laptops, tablets and smartphones to access the internet and how to use apps;

► what data is, and how it can help identify consumer needs and wants and

► how to analyse market trends to ensure that business decisions made are based on data.

To help you get started we’ll ask you to complete a digital checkup, to find out where your strengths and weaknesses are, so we can ensure we’re tailoring our support to meet your needs.

Our 12-week supported programme will follow the survey and will require you to set aside two hours of study per week for 12 weeks.

You’ll be encouraged to attend the weekly webinars live but these sessions will also be recorded for you to work through in your own time.

The programme combines high quality online learning and webinars.  It also provides up to 8 hours of 1:1 tutor support and leads to the achievement of a National Progression Award at SCQF level 4.

The digital technology and data revolution has put data at the core of many things, from personal privacy to public health, wealth creation to environmental protection. This is particularly important for employers, whether large or small businesses, public sector organisations or charities, because using data to create or improve products and services is key to unlocking economic growth and job creation.

By moving to more and more digital solutions and using data to update business models, organisations can develop and take advantage of new and innovative ways of operating. To do this successfully, businesses need to have a workforce that is fit for purpose.

Rapidly evolving technologies like artificial intelligence and robotics are increasing the demand for highly-skilled workers, but every type of work is affected. It is estimated that 90% of jobs already require digital skills. And while some jobs will disappear altogether as automation spreads, new jobs and whole new areas of work will emerge.

The College has recognised the importance of developing these skills and has embedded Data Science into its core curriculum. It is being taught to over 170 full-time students across a range of subjects (Animal Care, Agriculture, Construction, Business, Hospitality, Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Horse care).

Nothing. All data science courses under the Digital Driven Innovation (DDI) Gateway are free to each student.

Anyone with an interest in developing their digital skills towards a positive future in the digital sector should consider what we have to offer.

Courses may be particularly relevant to the following groups:

  • Long-term unemployed who would like to enhance employability and explore a potential new career pathway.
  • Adult learners considering returning to further study to enhance employability or explore the possibility of a career change.
  • Women returning to further study who wish to explore careers in the digital sector, previously discouraged by gender inequality.
  • Young people who are not currently engaged in education, employment or training and looking to enhance their digital skills.
  • Members of the Armed Forces who are currently working through their transition from the military to civilian life.

The programme consists of data science courses focused on the subject areas of Administration, Business, Computing and Finance. Supported by experienced college teaching staff, these courses can be completed at your own pace and are flexible as a means to fit around your current commitments. In the short space of four months, you will have gained a National Progression Award qualification which can be used to enter employment in the digital sector or progress to the next level of further study.

Are you keen to explore the possibility of short data science courses in another subject? Not to worry, our partner colleges, Borders College, Fife College and West Lothian College are delivering free, online courses across a range of alternative subjects in support of the DDI Skills Gateway project.

Scotland’s digital sector continues to flourish, which generates over six billion pounds towards the Scottish economy. As a result, it is estimated that a total of 13,000 new roles are created on an annual basis in the sector to meet the demands of expansion and growth. Those who are currently developing careers within the digital sector are 23% more likely to be employed on a full-time, permanent basis and their annual salaries are growing faster than any other sector in Scotland. Better still, should you have ambitions to set up your own digital business, the sector has seen a 60% growth in digital-based business start-ups. Now is the perfect time to make your aspirations happen within the world of digital.

The Edinburgh and South East City Deal comprises six local authorities who are working together with regional schools, universities, colleges and the private sector, as well as the UK and Scottish Government, to drive productivity and growth while addressing inequalities and deprivation.

Edinburgh and South East City Deal has launched an ambitious eight-year plan which will see it invest £25 million in eight employability and skills-based projects to overcome barriers those from disadvantaged communities face when it comes to enhancing employability.

The Data Driven Innovation (DDI) Skills Gateway is one of the projects which will help those from disadvantaged communities with the passion to explore the world of digital, enhance employability and access progression pathways towards a career in Scotland’s growing digital sector across the subject areas of finance, business and sport.
