HNC Counselling is designed to provide the opportunity to further develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant to the theory and skills practice of working with people and counselling within an encouraging and supportive environment.
At the HNC level it is recommended that you undertake some voluntary work in the helping professions relevant to counselling to build up your experience base.

Entry requirements

  • Advanced Certificate in Counselling Skills SCQF Level 6 or equivalent.
  • Participation in voluntary/paid work experience in a counselling setting or people centred workplace setting.
  • Two Highers at C or above.
  • Progression opportunities

  • HND: Counselling SCQF Level 8 (BACP Approved).
  • It is possible to progress on to a degree at university from this course.

    A variety of careers that require counselling skills.

    Course Content

    You'll Study:

    • Relationship centred counselling 1-3. This will enable you to develop skills to an advanced level using the Egan 3: Stage Model.
    • Counselling theories. You will look in detail at the historical development of the different counselling approaches and their application.
    • Personal development in a counselling skills setting and further development of self-awareness and personal growth.
