The College is celebrating the success of Tutor/Assessor Lyn Riley, who has achieved the prestigious L&D9DI Award less than a year after joining the college.

The qualification recognises excellence in assessment practice and learner support, highlighting Lyn’s commitment to delivering high-quality guidance throughout every stage of the learner journey. Her achievement strengthens the already strong assessment standards within the college.

Lyn’s transition from nursing into education has brought a wealth of professional expertise to her role. Drawing on her extensive healthcare background, she has quickly established herself as a confident and knowledgeable Tutor/Assessor, offering learners meaningful support, encouragement and practical insight. Colleagues say her caring approach and professional dedication have already made a significant impact on students across the college.

Reflecting on her achievement, Lyn described completing the award as both a personal and professional milestone.

“Changing careers from nursing to education was a major decision, but I have felt fully supported since joining Borders College. My mentor, Lorraine Ballantyne, and my assessor, Fiona Aitchison, have been excellent and encouraged me throughout the qualification.”

During the programme, Lyn developed advanced skills in assessment planning, observing practice, delivering constructive feedback and ensuring fair, consistent assessment decisions. She said the experience had greatly increased her confidence and deepened her understanding of what it means to be an effective assessor.

Lyn believes the qualification will have a direct positive impact on learners, enabling her to tailor assessments to individual needs while providing clear and meaningful feedback.
