Upon successful completion, learners will achieve:

National 4 Mathematics (SCQF Level 4)

This course is delivered part time in the evening, making it suitable for learners balancing study with work or other commitments.

Day & Time: Thursday evenings, 6:00pm to 9:00pm
Duration: 34 weeks

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. However, learners would benefit from:

• Prior experience of mathematics at National 3 level or equivalent.
• An interest in improving numeracy and problem solving skills.
• Motivation to engage with independent study and regular attendance.

This course is particularly suitable for adult returners to education, learners progressing from National 3 Mathematics, or those who need National 4 Mathematics for further study or employment.

Successful completion of National 4 Mathematics can support progression to:

• National 5 Mathematics.
• Other further education courses requiring numeracy at SCQF Level 4.
• Apprenticeships or vocational training programmes.
• Employment opportunities where numeracy skills are essential.

This qualification also supports wider progression into college programmes across business, care, construction, engineering and access courses.

All applications will be carefully reviewed by the delivery team to confirm that eligibility criteria and entry requirements are met. Admission to the course is based on these checks and will be at the discretion of the centre.
Successful applicants will be formally enrolled and provided with a confirmed start date to begin their course.

Assessment at National 4 is unit based and internally assessed, with no final exam. Learners are assessed throughout the course using a range of supportive methods, including:

• Classwork and practical tasks.
• Short assessments linked to each unit.
• Tutor feedback and opportunities to revisit learning.

Assessments are designed to help learners demonstrate understanding in a manageable and confidence building way.

Strong numeracy skills are valued across a wide range of sectors within the Scottish Borders, including business administration, health and social care, construction, manufacturing, retail and public services. National 4 Mathematics helps learners improve confidence with numbers, data and problem solving; skills that employers consistently look for.

The National 4 Mathematics course focuses on developing practical mathematical skills through real life contexts. Learners will work through the following key areas:

Numeracy
Number processes including fractions, decimals and percentages
Time, money and measurement
Interpretation of numerical information in everyday contexts

Expressions and Formulae
Using algebraic notation
Substituting values into expressions and formulae
Simple algebraic manipulation

Relationships
Understanding and using graphs
Working with coordinates
Interpreting relationships between variables

Problem Solving Skills
Applying mathematical knowledge to practical situations
Selecting appropriate strategies
Checking and interpreting solutions

Learning is supported through examples, practice activities and regular feedback to build confidence and understanding over time.
