Delivery

Modern Apprenticeships at Borders College offer a flexible approach to learning that combines practical experience with structured training. The majority of skills are developed in the workplace, ensuring apprentices gain real-world knowledge that directly benefits their role and employer. However, some apprenticeships include elements of formal, taught learning delivered outside the normal workplace. This may take place in college and can involve classroom-based sessions or hands-on skills development in a workshop environment.
Delivery models are agreed in advance through discussions with the learner, employer, and our delivery team, ensuring the training approach meets individual and business needs. This tailored method provides the right balance of on-the-job experience and structured learning, helping apprentices build confidence, competence, and the qualifications needed to succeed.

Entry requirements

Recruiting apprentices is primarily the responsibility of the employer, and before an apprenticeship begins, it is important to consider entry requirements and ensure the workplace reflects fair work, inclusion, and diversity principles. While there are generally no formal entry requirements, apprentices must be employed in a suitable job role that allows them to gain the skills, knowledge, and experience required to complete their qualification successfully.
To ensure the correct award is selected, reference should be made to the supporting documents available on the Skills Development Scotland (SDS) website, or employers and learners can seek guidance from our delivery team. We are here to provide advice and support throughout the process, helping identify the most appropriate apprenticeship pathway for both the learner and the business.

Progression opportunities

Completing an apprenticeship is a significant achievement that delivers benefits for both the learner and the employer. For learners, it provides a strong foundation of skills, knowledge, and confidence, opening the door to exciting opportunities for career progression or further study. For businesses, supporting team members through apprenticeships helps build a highly skilled workforce, improves retention, and demonstrates a commitment to professional development and growth.
With the achievement of competence-based and professional qualifications, apprenticeships create pathways to higher-level learning and advanced roles, ensuring individuals and organisations are well-prepared for future success. Our delivery team will continue to support both the learner and the business to explore the next steps following completion of the award, helping you make the most of the opportunities ahead.

Application and Interview Process

All applications will be carefully reviewed by the delivery team to confirm that eligibility criteria and entry requirements are met. Admission to the course is based on these checks and will be at the discretion of the centre, supported by the employer.
Successful applicants will be formally enrolled and provided with a confirmed start date to begin their award.
