Modern Apprentices get a ‘taste’ of food hygiene importance

Having in-depth knowledge of food hygiene is an essential part of many occupations these days, including Childcare, and completing these qualifications enables candidates to build a safer environment in which they practice.

12 Work-based Childcare Modern Apprentices (MAs) recently undertook the online Elementary Food Hygiene, run by Borders College, and all successfully completed the course.

The Scottish Borders Council employees covered a wide range of topics, relevant to work being undertaken in their professional settings throughout the Scottish Borders.

The course was split into two sessions, with candidates covering topics such as bacterial food poisoning, food spoilage, cross-contamination and their prevention.

They also looked at personal hygiene, cleaning and disinfection, pest control, hazard analysis and critical control points, as well as related food safety law.

Due to the current situation the course, which previously would have been offered within a classroom setting, had to be adapted to enable candidates to undertake the qualification online, using webinars and breakout sessions.

The online provision enabled the course to be run as two half-day sessions, giving the participants time to work on the content between the two sessions. This helped them prepare for the assessment at the end of their studies.

Feedback received from the MAs was very positive, with Rosie Reilly commenting:
