Student Aaron Johnstone is celebrating success after completing an 18‑month placement with the college’s Facilities team as part of the Skills for Learning and Work course.
Aaron began working weekly with Facilities team member Judi Dixon, developing key employability skills such as communication, teamwork and responsibility. Throughout his placement, Aaron showed a strong commitment to his role, taking pride in completing tasks and responding positively to support and encouragement from his mentors.
Over the course of the placement, Aaron has grown significantly in confidence, building valuable workplace skills and becoming an active member of the team.
Reflecting on his experience, Aaron said:
“This placement has made me feel like I have a job of my own. I feel included and people speak to me. I can now get myself a wee job as I finish college soon.”
Judi Dixon praised Aaron’s progress, adding:
“Aaron has gained confidence and independence over this academic year. He can now complete tasks on his own and shows initiative by completing tasks without being asked. He thrives on doing a good job where people notice and compliment his work, and he feels part of the Facilities team, often sharing a laugh with staff.”
Aaron’s journey highlights the positive impact of supported work placements in preparing students for employment.
