Borders College has been awarded the Bronze Award under the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, marking an important milestone in its commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community and recognising the value of service personnel, veterans and their families.
The Bronze Award is part of the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, which celebrates organisations that actively pledge support to defence and inspire others to do the same. The scheme highlights employers whose values align with the Armed Forces Covenant.
By securing bronze status, Borders College has formally signed the Armed Forces Covenant and demonstrated its understanding of the responsibilities involved in supporting those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces. This includes ensuring that members of the Armed Forces community are treated with fairness and respect and are not disadvantaged in accessing opportunities or services.
The Armed Forces Covenant is built on two key principles. It ensures that serving personnel, veterans and their families face no disadvantage compared with other citizens, while also recognising that special consideration may be appropriate for those who have made significant sacrifices, including the injured and bereaved.
Debbie Kerr, Director of People Services said:
“Borders College’s achievement demonstrates our role not only as a centre for education and training but also as an organisation committed to social responsibility and community values.
“This award places the college among a growing number of employers across the UK who are helping to strengthen connections between education, employment and the Armed Forces community.”
To achieve the Bronze Award, Borders College confirmed its support for the Covenant, worked closely with Defence Relationship Management representatives and communicated its commitment across its workforce.
