Hope After Loss: Borders support group urges bereaved not to struggle alone

Now three years old, the Scottish Borders Widowed Community provides a safe space and regular meet-ups for anyone coping with the death of a partner.

A support group for widowed people in the Scottish Borders is marking its third anniversary, having become a lifeline for those navigating the challenges of grief and loss.

The Scottish Borders Widowed Community was founded on 18 August 2022 by Alison Finnie, a Student Support Officer at Borders College, following the death of her husband. What began as a small idea has grown into a recognised support network that has already hosted more than 80 events across the region.

The group provides twice-monthly meet-ups, including “Widows Hope” – a support group held in Galashiels – alongside a rolling programme of social activities ranging from coffee catch-ups and lunches to walks and craft events.

Alison said the community fills a gap that few other services can meet.

“Are you widowed and living in the Scottish Borders? You’re not alone, and you don’t have to go through this journey by yourself,” she said. “This community is more than just a group – it’s a lifeline. It’s a place where people don’t need to explain their grief, because everyone understands.”

The network is inclusive of all genders, ages and relationship statuses. The only requirement for joining is that members must have experienced the loss of a partner.

Alison, who credits the group with helping her through her own grief, said the mutual support it offers is invaluable.

“I still miss my husband every day, but I’ve reached a level of acceptance, and I’ve been able to move forward,” she said. “That wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing, inspirational people in this community. Everyone is at a different stage of grief, but we’re there for each other in a way no one else can be.”

Over the past three years, the Scottish Borders Widowed Community has become widely recognised and supported by local organisations. Its members say it has provided them with connection, hope, and the opportunity to rebuild their lives.

The group is inviting anyone in the Borders who has lost a partner to reach out. To find out more, or to join the private Facebook group, visit: Scottish Borders Widowed Community or email: sbwcenquiries@outlook.com
