The Scottish Government has appointed Ray McCowan as the new Chair of the Regional Board at Borders College.
Currently a Director at the WEA, an education charity that provides high quality community-based adult education to those who are disadvantaged. The WEA provides learning opportunities to those who need help and support the most, and would be unlikely to access education in more formal settings.
In his role at the WEA, Ray's vision is to deliver the 'best in class customer experience' to funders and partners, an outstanding educational experience for learners, and to develop and grow the organisation in Scotland.
Ray commented on his appointment:
"Education for me on a personal level has been by far the biggest differentiator in my life. And in my view, it's the biggest differentiator in many people's lives.
"I absolutely love education and believe in what it can do for individuals and communities across Scotland.
"What I hope to achieve in the Borders is to bring my lifetime passion for education into the region. If I can, in some small way, make a really good college a little bit better, then that's what I aim to do.
“I've been here for one day, and you can really sense the enthusiasm for the Borders, which is truly palpable.
"My immediate priorities are really to get to know the College, Board members, staff and students I will be working with. The absolute epicentre of a college is the staff and of course, its students."
College Principal Angela Cox said:

Ray takes over the position of Chair from Board member Elaine Acaster, who has acted in an interim capacity for nearly two years.
Ray lives in Kirkliston near Edinburgh and is married with a daughter and grandchild.
