Borders College has been shortlisted for a prestigious Green Gown Award, recognising its commitment to embedding sustainability across every aspect of college life.
The shortlist acknowledges the College's work in developing and implementing its Sustainability Strategy 2026-2030, which builds on the success of its previous sector-leading sustainability strategy and aligns closely with the ambitions set out in Vision 2030.
Rather than focusing solely on reducing carbon emissions, the College has adopted a whole-organisation approach that places sustainability at the heart of decision-making, operations, learning and teaching. The strategy sets out clear and realistic targets while expanding its focus to include climate change adaptation and the skills required to support a just transition to a more sustainable future.
A key feature of the strategy is its emphasis on empowering staff and students through curriculum integration, skills development and everyday practice. This approach ensures sustainability becomes part of the College's culture and not simply a standalone environmental initiative.
The Green Gown Awards celebrate sustainability excellence across the further and higher education sector, and the shortlist recognises the collective effort of staff, students and partners who have contributed to the College's sustainability journey.
Reflecting on the work undertaken, Borders College identified three key lessons that have shaped its success: ensuring ambitious ideas are supported by realistic and measurable actions, taking time to celebrate achievements and learn from challenges, and securing commitment from senior leaders and stakeholders across the organisation.
Winning a Green Gown Award would provide national recognition for the College's collaborative approach and its commitment to ensuring sustainability is embedded in everything it does, helping prepare learners for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
