Borders College, in partnership with Scottish Borders Community Learning and Development, offers English language classes for adults living in the Scottish Borders whose first language is not English.

Whether you are new to learning English or looking to develop your existing skills, our ESOL classes can help you improve your confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing English in everyday life, education and work.

Learning English can help you communicate more effectively, access further study opportunities, support your career goals and become more connected to your local community.

What We Offer

We offer ESOL classes at a range of levels, from beginners at SCQF Level 2 through to SCQF Level 5, ensuring that you are placed in a class that matches your current abilities and learning needs.

Classes focus on practical language skills that can help you:

  • Communicate confidently in everyday situations
  • Improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills
  • Support your employment or career aspirations
  • Prepare for further education and training
  • Build confidence when accessing local services and community activities
  • Meet and learn alongside other adult learners

Online Learning

Classes are delivered online, allowing you to learn from home while receiving support from experienced tutors.

Our friendly and supportive learning environment helps you develop your English skills at a pace that is right for you.

Assessment and Class Placement

After registering your interest, you will be invited to complete an online assessment with a trained tutor.

This assessment helps us understand your current level of English and ensures that you are placed in the most suitable class to support your learning and development.

Following your assessment, you will receive an invitation when a suitable class becomes available. Depending on demand, there may be a waiting period before assessment or class enrolment.

Fees

The cost of the course for residents is only £20 with some learners supported through other schemes. You will be supported with this as you study, and learners outside of the region are able to access the course, with a higher fee as outlines in the course page.
